The Traffic & Safety Commission met on March 27 to review many street striping projects around the city. The meeting was quite long and can be viewed on the City of Albany site, and there are some pretty interesting project proposals throughout. I've cut out the relevant parts which can be viewed below (only 21 minutes cut from almost 4 hours).
Below is the page from the proposed ATP striping and signage on Peralta Ave for the next Traffic and Safety Commission meeting. I've separated the Peralta page for easier reference. Below are relevant details for the street. March 27, 2014 7pm
Albany City Hall Link to Agenda The Traffic and Safety Commission is going to be discussing traffic calming on Peralta and Posen at the next meeting. There are 2 separate discussions. 1) "6A. ATP Striping and Signage Improvements-Complete design plans for 14 separate bicycle Striping and Signage projects throughout the City, including segments of...Peralta Ave...Posen Ave." The plans for striping projects can be found here. Peralta is on page 14, Posen is on page 17, and Francis is on page 16. This is mostly bike lane striping. The Commission will receive a report regarding the Active Transportation Plan. "Recommended Action: That the Commission recommend that (a) staff proceed with the preparation of 95% plans" A summary of the Peralta Ave proposed changes can be found here. 2) "6E. Report on the Traffic Circles on Posen and Peralta." It was requested that the city staff look into possible traffic circles as a traffic calming measure. The original discussion was only about the striping and the part of Peralta at the intersection of Posen. As we all know, drivers have been speeding from the top of the hill before the intersection of Peralta and Francis. A report will be given, but no information about the substance has been made available yet. 55 mph! The fastest recorded speed during the survey. The results of the survey show consistent speeding according to the 85th percentile as stated by the current City of Albany traffic calming policy (which states that consistent speeding is determined by the 85th percentile measured at 30 mph or more). The 85th percentile speed for this block measured above the threshold of 30 mph. Another surprising result is the average daily traffic volume of almost 1700 vehicles per day. The good news is that the City can move forward with traffic calming efforts. The next step: The City will create "35% plans" for preliminary discussions. Staff has also suggested that a discussion of these ideas be held at a future Traffic and Safety meeting. Read the report below and watch the Traffic and Safety Committee meeting.
